New starter
After breaking the new mini starter that i bought i decided to try the old starter again, was a bit hit and miss, sometimes it would turn over slowly and sometimes fast enough to start. When it was turning over it was loud and i though it might need shimming so added some, then it stopped turning engine over,so bought another standard one.
Here's my old one when i took it off,i say old,it's actually only about 12 months old.
Here's the new one off ebay from USAuto, only £55 delivered.Still have same problem though with slow and fast turning and noisy. Not sure if it needs more shims, already got about 7 shims in there.

My car has its original starter when it got a bit lazy I put an extra Earth on it that sorted the problem 14years ago and it's still going strong

Re: New starter
I thought it was a header problem at first that's why i bought the mini one, although headers are wrapped,i put a earth cable from chassis to one of starter motor bolts but that didn't help either.
Seems odd i have only had this problem since the engine wouldn't turn at all and i found the washer against the push rod.

Not a clue, looked like one of the washers off the intake bolts which i had off a few weeks before but they all have their washers in place.

The mk4 Continental was a bit like Christine, didn't fix itself but one owner killed himself in it,sat in it drinking a bottle of whiskey with a pipe from exhaust into car.Next owner parked it on Ainsdale beach nr Southport and tide came in on it,i guess that's why it always sounded like it was running on water, lol. Then i bought it but decided it needed too much so sold it to the Blues brothers in Crewe. They towed it back with a wagon but it wasn't running, the one steering it had igbition on to use lights, but then it started to rain so he had wipers on,then battery went flat just as they were going over a hump back bridge,on the other side of the bridge was a almost new Rover, the guy driving the wagon went round it but the one in the Lincoln couldn't see it and ploughed straight into it,wrote both cars off.
Was glad to get rid of that one

they really do improve performance and throttle response a lot though
was amazed how much faster mine was after fitting them. wrapped mine and the starter, and never had a problem

Re: New starter
Definitely noticed a difference when fitted, like dad said better pick up, better throttle response and better noise

Re: New starter
With the starter that just broke i am sure i had 3 shims and never had a problem with it for about 12 months, then i had the starting problem when i found the washer in the head.
The flex plate is same one that's been on from when i fitted the 400 engine,i have been thinking maybe it's warped from when i was messing around trying to get the mini one to work, but wouldn't think that would affect shimming, but maybe it's what's making it noisy turning over,i just assumed it's a shimming problem.
