Has anyone changed transmission fluid before?

Post by Swampdonnk on Wed Apr 08, 2015 2:53 pm

My Trans Am has a 3500 stall converter and I think my transmission fluid has cooked, it's seems to slip if I floor it in drive at low speed and if I do a fast pull away from stationary. The revs sit at 5500 but the speed seems to catch up after a while if you know what I mean. The fluid smells of burning and it's not red anymore. I want to change it but I looked into it and it looks more involved than jus undoing the sump plug and then topping it up. Has anyone done it their self or is it a garage job?

shitty job as paul says, there is no drain plug so you have to unbolt the sump pan and try to catch the fluid as you lower it
unfortunately burnt smelling oil is a sign of worn/slipping clutch bands and changing fluid will probably not help.
worth a try, but you will need to change the fluid and the filter (clogged filter can cause problems). you will need a sump pan gasket too

What about the fluid in the torque converter though?

no way to drain without dropping trans. and pulling off
you could fill/flush a couple of times but never get it all

There is two ways i know of for doing it,ones probably expensive and the other way is expensive if you get it wrong.First way is disconnecting cooler pipes and flushing fluid through until you see clean fluid coming out,so gonna need plenty fluid.
Second way is drilling a hole in convertor, let it drain and then plugging it with a certain type of rivet, can't remember type of rivet,i think i have a manual that shows that way.But you have to know exactly where to drill as if you hit one of the internal vanes you will knacker the convertor.I would also worry about filings getting in the trans. Some people tap them to use a pipe plug.
Depending on type of trans and convertor size there is more fluid in the convertor than in the trans itself.

Yeah I don't think I'm gonna drill into my torque converter hehe

Pete at GS Auto's is gonna do it for me for £150 including a new filter and gasket Smile

I was gonna say it sounds dear, lol.I would take box out before paying that, although it's still virtually impossible to get the fluid out with convertor out of car.

filter, gaskets and fluid are not cheap, and a messy time consuming job to do right
