you can, but be careful. easy to go through on corners and edges if not careful
use a fairly fine compound
not sure how good a cheap ebay one is (don't polish mine, cover with stickers is easier)
clay bar will go a long way to getting it better

My neighbour had a Corsa that was almost pink it was faded that much,he polished it up to a nice red shine using t cut by hand.Took him pretty much a full day,i guess a Firebird is almost twice the size so would take two days.
I was talking to a car detailer at a classic car show yesterday,i mentioned how when i polished my Trans Am with my polisher/grinder it left swirl marks, which i know can be removed with a different polish. He said it was from using the grinder type,he said to use a dual action for best results, but they are usually more money to buy.

if using a machine keep the speed very low you will burn the paint. if you are just bringing the colour up use some thing like g10 with a soft sponge pad not the course pad or you will go through as john said. let the machine do the work don't press. to get rid of swirl marks us 3m finnese or there blue top but its around £30 a bottle lot of money for a tight arse Laughing

polished mine myself originally
takes ages but worth it, you can buy small polishing mops to use in a drill which saves time
you need a drill with slow speed or polish goes everywhere

got them refurbished properly last year as I got fed up having to polish them every few months
powder coat, diamond cut and lacquer means just wash and wipe
cost about £75 a wheel
